A group of concerned citizens staged protest against the leather industry in view of the extreme cruelty involved as well as the devastating impact it has on the environment.
The Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi himself acknowledged this grim fact at the inauguration of the leather fair when he stated that Industrial development is needed, but not at the cost of the country's land and drinking water resources".

The Leather Export Promotion Council has given an award to M/s Lakhani Shoes of Faridabad for its export of non-leather footwear. When alternates which are cruelty free and Eco-friendly are available, should the country's cattle wealth be decimated to increase exports of leather to other countries ruining the environment and besmirching the concept of ahimsa - India's greatest contribution to the world?
Carrying signs which read "You don't cat her flesh - Why do you wear her skin" and "Leather Production Has Destroyed Our Environment and Polluted Our Ground Water", the demonstrators pledged to carry on their campaign even after the close of the current leather fair and appealed to the Government not to encourage and subsidise the leather industry.
