We are also thankful to our Governing Body member, Mrs. Shakunthala Jagannathan, who is not only a regular donor but has taken on the responsibility of visiting all the above establishments on a regular basis to collect the contributions of customers.

From the newsletter dated August 1998)

ATTENTION! USA DONORS – We are fortunate in having M/s. Jeevdaya Charity Incorporated offering to route donations from our friends in the U.S.A. Contributions intended for the Blue Cross routed through Jeevdaya will enable the donor to claim a tax rebate. Our friends in the US may please send their contributions in future to :

M/s. JEEVDAYA CHARITY INCORPORATED, PO BOX 110263, NUTLEY, NJ 07110-0905, USA stating that this amount is intended for onward transmission to the Blue Cross of India, Chennai. Our sincere thanks to MR. ARUN KANTHARIA for this facility and also for the first donation personably sent by him.

(From the Annual Report dated March 31, 1998)

All the account-keeping, office work and other administrative work at the Blue Cross is done by volunteers. Hence there are no expenses on this score.

The Government of Tamil Nadu has granted exemption from the Tamil Nadu Sales Tax for all medicines and medical supplies for the hospital and for the new ambulance.

Substantial amounts are also received in kind by the Blue Cross. People like Mrs. Janaki Vishwanathan, who sends us two bags of rice every month. Others donate equipment such as fans, tarpaulins, cages, animal graspers, pet nursers (i.e. feeding bottles for pups, kittens & squirrels).

AN APPEAL FOR FUNDS

After completion of thirty three years of service to animals, we have virtually no Corpus Fund from which we can count on a definite income. Ordinarily, this would not matter if we were not maintaining a shelter for sick and rescued animals. Over 400 animals, including about 150 cattle, are housed by us at any one time.

While we can reduce, or even temporarily suspend, our other activities if no funds are available, this option is not possible in the case of our shelter. This costs us around RS. 2,00,000 per month, mainly for feed. We must have at least this much income guaranteed so that the animals in the shelter do not starve. The only means of ensuring that our humane work can be maintained is by increasing the Society's income. Legacies and other bequests to the Society are of inestimable assistance.

To those benevolent individuals who may wish to become benefactors by will to the Society, the following form is respectfully suggested:

"I bequeath to BLUE CROSS OF INDIA, Chennai, for the general purpose of the Society, the sum of RS. ________ free of all duties payable at my death, and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer or other proper officer for the time being of the said Society shall be sufficient discharge of such legacy".

Note: Wills must be signed by the Testator and attested by two witnesses in the presence of the Testator and of each other.
