Way to Go!!

The third weekend of January each year is witness to an unprecedented rush to Blue Cross of India’s shelter in Guindy. People literally wait for the gates to open and want to be the first adoptee in the Pet adoption program conducted by Blue Cross.

The annual pet adoption program was started by Blue Cross 8 years ago in response to a worldwide call by the North Shore Animal league in USA. The first weekend of May every year saw animal shelters all over the world holding adoption programs and finding homes for hundreds of abandoned animals in those two days. But on a practical note, in India, we found that either people were travelling or the heat of May was keeping them away and so we decided to shift the dates to January which is definitely cooler. Not coincidentally, the Animal Welfare Fortnight is celebrated every year from the 15th to the 30th of January all over India. It was only appropriate that we indulged in a special drive to find homes for mongrel pups and kittens during this period.

Adopt a PetOn the third Saturday and Sunday of Jan , between 8.30 a m and 5.30 p.m. Blue Cross becomes a beehive of activity as our volunteers cope with a steady flow of prospective adoptees picking up a pup or kitten of their choice and returning home with a smile ,looking forward to the days ahead where the little one will become an inseparable member of their loving family. Pups always form the majority since people are more inclined toward dogs. Booklets on how to handle the pet and a ready reckoner on the feeding and vaccination schedules are given out and our volunteers personally enquire about the pets during the next few weeks to make sure that everything is fine.

Blue Cross has always focused on mongrels as pets since we believe that they're the ideal pets for our Indian conditions. No less than a pedigree, or sometimes even better, when it comes to being a lovable companion, mongrels come with the USP of zero maintenance! No AC rooms, no special diets or frequent emergency visits to your vets.

Also, when we find homes for mongrel pets, we save it from an uncertain future on the streets, while systematically controlling the street dog population by taking away the pups from the roads and finding them proper homes Adopt a Petinstead.

But those who missed this program need not lose heart! All through the year, we give out pups, kittens and grown up dogs too, for adoption. Grown up dogs are very popular with those who want a house broken (toilet trained) pet. People who have been toying with the idea of taking in a pet animal are motivated with our sustained campaigns in January to commemorate the Animal Welfare Fortnight. Anyone with a room in his heart and home can come to our Guindy premises(72, Velachery Main Road) and adopt an abandoned animal or call us at 230 0666 / 235 4959 for more information or send an emails to us.

There are millions of stray and homeless animals in India today. The Blue Cross does what is practically possible to control these numbers in a humane way for e.g. by adopting procedures such as Animal Birth Control. But due to severe financial and infrastructural constraints, it is impossible for the Blue Cross to individually provide shelter for all these animals. If each one of us were to adopt one stray/ homeless animal, the numbers of those without shelter would become negligible.

This page is intended to facilitate the adoption of homeless animals, but is not for breeders looking to advertise their puppies/ kittens etc... on the Internet.

We request you to take a little bit of an effort to help find good homes for these helpless creatures.

NOTE: Adoption is totally free. The "Blue Cross of India" only requires the adopter to submit certain details about himself/ herself.

If you can't decide between an Alsatian, a Doberman or a Poodle, get them all in an All-Indian dog.

Adopt a Mongrel from the "Blue Cross" shelter and get everything you're looking for, all in one dog. The intelligence of a Poodle and the loyalty of a Collie. The bark of a Shepherd and the heart of a Saint Bernard, the spots of a Dalmatian, size of a Schnauzer and the speed of a Greyhound. A genuine All Indian has it all. And the  shelter has lots of All Indian Mongrels waiting for you. There are genuine, All Indian cats too.

Get the best of everything. Adopt a Mongrel
